James Keys for District 6 Supervisor 2010

James Keys is a community leader with a proven track record of creating a better and healthier community.  Since moving to San Francisco in 1999 he has been an effective advocate for budget reform, senior citizens, and mental health.

Last year alone, James led the effort to save funding for critical San Francisco services that were threatened by budget cuts. As a result over $14 million was restored by the Board of Supervisors and vital programs like the Homeless Drop-In Center, Nutrition for Seniors, and Community Behavioral Health Services were spared from drastic cutbacks. During the course of this contentious budget process none of the programs James saved came at the expense of the Police Department, the Fire Department or the Sheriff’s Department.

Also James took a lead role in fund raising for the MacCanDo Tenderloin Youth Track Club. These efforts allowed at risk young athletes from the Tenderloin to compete at the Junior Olympics

As the past Health Program Director for the Senior Action Network, James worked to improve the lives of San Francisco’s senior citizens through grass roots organizing and training seniors themselves on how to shape public policy. And he now continues that work at his new job at the Institute on Aging here in San Francisco.

As the Chair of the San Francisco Mental Health Board, James collaborated with the San Francisco Police Department on Crisis Intervention Training and produced an innovative study on the current status of mental health services for women and girls.

James is the President of the Alliance for a Better District 6, a community based non-profit devoted to increasing participation in elections and government by low and very low income residents of District 6. James is also an active member of the California Alliance for Retired Americans, the Central City Democrats, the Community Budget Reform Council, and Single-Payer Now!

James is now focused on running for District 6 Supervisor. Having interned extensively at City Hall and written several resolutions for San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors that have passed; James has a thorough understanding of the legislative process and will use his expertise to promote public health, public safety, pedestrian safety, and affordable housing.
